science and art tend to coalesce in esthetics plastcity, and form.

1920's Host

HoCoPoLitSo and Howard Community College's Arts Collective partner to create a transcendent evening of music, poetry, and visual art from the 1920’s Harlem Renaissance. Artists such as Langston Hughes, Georgia Douglas Johnson, and Duke Ellington will explore the power of words and music in an atmosphere evocative of a prohibition speakeasy. Celebrate HoCoPoLitSo’s 45th anniversary with this unique historical exploration of the art that transformed our world. Hosts will provide customer service to both event guests and artists. More information on the event can be found at https://hocopolitso.org/programs/ Note: To signup a volunteer that does not meet the minimum age only the minimum age with adult age, parents/adults need to create a team which includes themselves and the volunteer(s) that are under age. The parent/adult can then “sign up with a team” for the opportunity selecting the team members who will volunteer. Click here for more information related to Family & Youth Group Volunteers.

Literary Liaison for Writer-in-Residence

For more than 28 years the Howard County Poetry & Literature Society (HoCoPoLitSo) has been sponsoring a writer-in-residence at Howard County Public High Schools (12) and Homewood Center. In order to manage this amazing opportunity, a volunteer liaison is engaged to set the schedule and accompany the writer during their visit. Visits, generally 2 per day, take place between October and March during the regular high school day for 40-60 minutes. Classes range from 12-200 depending upon the school. Together with the writer, the liaison will create a 5-6 page handout of the writer's work to be forwarded to students prior to the visit. HoCoPoLitSo staff and board members assist as consultants and support visits when liaison is unavailable. A background in literature, education a plus. To receive a formal position description or request more information, email HoCoPoLitSo@yahoo.com

STEM Professional Classroom Assistants

The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) needs STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) professionals to assist K-12 STEM teachers during the 2019-20 school year. The details of the collaboration are worked out between the teacher and the volunteer, and may involve giving demonstrations, assisting in lab experiments, lecturing on special topics, assisting with homework, etc. The hours are flexible, and volunteers attend a one-day orientation session at the end of September before being assigned to schools. To see how volunteers are assisting their STEM teachers, view the video clips at www.stemvolunteers.org. If you care about K-12 STEM education and have time to share your knowledge with students and teachers, please send a note to robert.james.thomas@verizon.net, or call Rob Thomas at 301-570-2811 (office) or 301-717-0900 (cell).
