The Friends of the Whipps Cemetery and Memorial Gardens, Inc. have developed a Mission Statement to guide us in our work. Our goals are: TO PRESERVE AND MAINTAIN this one-acre cemetery, established in 1855—The physical grave monuments, the history of the old graveyard, and Both heritage and native plants; TO ENCOURAGE, within the larger community, a respect for Maryland’s many old burial grounds dating to earlier centuries, thereby building an appreciation of our rich cultural heritage; TO RESTORE the Whipps Cemetery as a garden-park in the character of our Country’s Garden Cemeteries; our Nation’s first parks; TO RETAIN the vernacular features of this small, rural graveyard Of the 100’s, while adding historically-appropriate gardens; TO DEMONSTRATE, through stewardship of the cemetery, ecologically—sound Horticultural practice that protects the Environment; TO DEVELOP AN ADAPTIVE USE for the Whipps Cemetery and Memorial Gardens as a site for educating the public about • The history and culture of 19th century Ellicott Mills and • The use of heritage and native plants in the contemporary Landscape, and TO PROTECT A GREEN SPACE within the urban environment to serve as a Sanctuary for native plants, a haven for local wildlife, and a place of Peace and tranquility to refresh the human soul.
