JA BizTown

Fourth and fifth graders may not be old enough to drive, work, vote, or be the boss. But that doesn't stop them from operating a radio station, insurance company, distribution center, or restaurant; or from conducting bank business or voting for mayor. They do all this and more at JA BizTown, a 10,000 square foot “city,” complete with its own micro-economy. In the classroom, teachers lead pre-visit lessons on budgeting, careers, and business operations. On JA BizTown visit day, one to two business volunteers are assigned to each JA BizTown shop and guide students as they put their classroom learning into practice by running and working in a JA BizTown business. Typical time commitment is 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.
