Community Dinner (Hosts, Servers & Clean-up)

Come join the "Make a Memory that Matters" movement by helping feed the marginalized citizens of Maryland a meal. Volunteers are needed to help serve food, work in the dish room and maintain the dining room. Volunteers are asked to arrive at 5pm, no later than 5:15pm, to help serve from 5-7pm, and wrap up from 7-7:15pm. Each dinner (weekly on Tuesday & Wednesday) has 15 available volunteer slots. The age requirement to serve food is 16 years old; 14 years old to help in the other areas.

Conservation Stewardship Project

The Conservation Stewardship Project, a joint program of the Howard County Master Gardeners and the Howard County Recreation & Parks, targets the problem of controlling invasive exotic plant species in the Middle Patuxent Environmental Area (MPEA). Volunteer work dates occur monthly from March through November, skipping July and August. Each date includes an educational component concerning the target invasive species or work area for the day. Grounds Help

Brooke Grove’s landscape includes a large number of gardens and extensive grounds. Assistance is needed to help weed garden areas and pick up trash and debris on the grounds, walkways and roadways. If you like being outdoors, this is the perfect volunteer job for you! Activities Assistant

This position is perfect for students! You'll be helping our Life Enrichment team in the nursing center or one of 7 different assisted living houses with activities for residents ranging from playing games to doing crafts, making jewelry, leading (minimal) exercise sessions, going on walks, gathering together for musical performances, readings and more. These activities typically take place from 10am - noon and from 12noon - 2pm, seven days a week. If you want to do volunteer for both times, we can train you to be a dining & hospitality aide so that you can fill the time from 12noon - 2pm, thereby putting in 6 hours in one day - a quick way to earn SSL hours!

Outings Assistant

Brooke Grove's Assisted Living staff frequently take residents on outings, and need assistance helping them to get on and off the bus as well as accompanying them to lunch, on a shopping trip, or on a field trip to a baseball game or bowling, for example. Volunteers are scheduled for outings as needed; they take place on any given weekday, typically between the hours of 10am - 12:30pm, 11am - 1:30pm, or 10am - 4pm.

Onsite Salon Transport

Volunteers are needed to help transport residents from their rooms to in-house salons in the nursing center, rehab center, and assisted living houses. Days are Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday and there are morning and afternoon shifts: 10am – 1pm and 1pm -4pm. Requires being on your feet most of the time and the ability to push a wheelchair. Music or Entertainment

Volunteers are needed who play piano, guitar or other instruments, can sing or lead sing-alongs, lead hymn-sings on Sundays, or provide some type of entertainment for resident groups. Small groups may be accepted depending on where the entertainment would be scheduled on campus. Laundry Room Organizer

Culinary Runner

What is a culinary runner, you ask? A volunteer who takes rejected meals back to the kitchen and gets a replacement meal to deliver to a dining room. This volunteer position is a huge help to the kitchen and nursing staff, who can’t stop what they’re doing to pick-up and deliver these special requests. This volunteer role is available during the breakfast, lunch and dinner hours - 7:15 - 10:15am; 12noon - 2:45pm; and 5:00 - 7:30pm, seven days a week.

Sign Language Interpreter

Brooke Groves' Admissions offices needs occasional volunteer assistance interpreting for deaf individuals.This is an on-call volunteer position interpreting during the admissions process to our rehabilitation facility and nursing center.

Donation Processors

Volunteers needed to process donations from holiday clothing drives and throughout the year, consisting of clothing and accessories for men and women. Dining & Hospitality Aide

Help is needed in 6 different Brooke Grove dining rooms during breakfast, lunch or dinner with setup, getting drinks, opening drink or food packets, preparing residents and general clean up. Aides may also assist in transporting residents to/from the dining room or by responding to call bells during meals. At dinnertime, volunteers may also be asked to set up movies to start after dinner ends. There are different meal times for each dining room in the Nursing Center, but inclusive schedules are as shown below. Mealtimes in the Rehab Center are the same for both dining rooms. Memory Bear Seamstresses Needed!

Calling all seamstresses and quilters! Seasons Hospice needs volunteers to create Memory Bears from patients' clothing. These teddy bears are given to the patient's loved ones as something to hold and cherish during the grieving process. Each piece of fabric holds a special memory of their loved ones.

Friendly Visitor Companion for Hospice Patients

Enriching the lives of our patients and their loved ones is our primary goal at Heartland Hospice. To achieve this mission, we seek the compassionate assistance of volunteers and invite them to join us on the journey of a lifetime! Because they are the heart of our organization, we welcome volunteers with various skills/talents and availability to provide the following to our patients and families during regular visits: companionship and socialization, emotional & spiritual support, reading of materials (sacred scriptures, literature, magazines, mail), music enrichment, arts & crafts, grief support, relief sitting for caregivers, running errands and patient legacy projects. These opportunities are available throughout Baltimore City/County and Howard & Anne Arundel Counties. Receptionist, Free Bikes 4 Kidz headquarters

Free Bikes 4 Kidz is an organization geared toward helping kids ride into a happier, healthier childhood by providing bikes (and helmets!) to those most in need. We collect bikes from the public, refurbish them over a ten week period, and then give them away before the holidays. We will be conducting a bicycle collection drive on October 5 at about a dozen sites all over Howard County. We'll then bring the bikes to 10750 Little Patuxent Parkway where we will refurbish them. We need volunteers to serve as hosts to our scores of volunteers. This person will greet volunteers, assist groups as they arrive and confirm each volunteer has registered online, signed in and been given a name tag. Qualities: Friendly, positive, professional demeanor Excellent verbal communication skills Ability to work with people of many different backgrounds and abilities Ability to work cooperatively with staff and volunteers Fondness for biking and connection to the bike community a plus Work Hours/Structure: The volunteers will each commit a minimum of one shift a week and encourage more from October 7 - December 13. Do minor maintenance on donated bicycles that will be given to kids in need

Some bicycle experience is needed. Volunteers with Dogs or Cats

Do you have a friendly, sociable dog or cat and some time to visit older adults? Paws4Comfort volunteers take their own dogs or cats and visit nursing homes, assisted living residences, 50+ centers, and adult day care facilities to bring friendly animal visits to those who can no longer keep their own pets, but still enjoy animal companionship. (Pets must be at least one year old, and must have lived with you for 6 months.) Veteran Interviews for the Library of Congress

The Veterans History Project is an oral history archive that collects the firsthand accounts of US veterans. Volunteers will find veterans in their communities and conduct an oral history interview of at least 30 minutes in length, and submit the recordings to the Library of Congress where they will be archived and made available to researchers.
