CASA Volunteer Pre-Service Training

Each year in Howard County, children are abused, neglected, or abandoned by their families. These children are removed from their homes and placed in foster care or institutions each year. Their only “crime” is that they have been victims. That’s where Voices for Children CASA volunteers come in. Our CASA volunteers work to ensure that all children have a safe and permanent home. Voices for Children recruits, trains and supervises community volunteers to become court appointed special advocates (CASAs). Training will be held Monday evenings for 7 consecutive weeks beginning January 13, 2020. Our training focuses on the dynamics of child abuse and neglect, an understanding of the court process and familiarity with community resources. All interested volunteers must complete an application and an interview before beginning training. After successful completion of training and thorough background checks, volunteers are matched with a child through the Howard County Circuit Court.

"I've Been to the Mountaintop:" a Listening Session for Men - MLK Day of Service

Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s work in the civil rights movement is only a part of his legacy as one of the world’s foremost humanitarian committed to non-violent activism. “I’ve Been to the Mountaintop,” Dr. King’s final speech before he was assassinated, was one of his most impassioned and fervent calls to action. He asked every member of society to not lose hope and to hold steadfast to the dreams of a more just and free world. Please join us for this important conversation in honoring Dr. King’s commitment to equality and justice. We will explore the intersections of race and gender with gendered violence, and how to create stronger, safer, and healthier communities. This listening session aspires to be a place that: supports men’s voices, provides an opportunity to help shape programming, and solidifies an empowered and equal partnership in the feminist movement.
