Conservation Stewardship Project

The Conservation Stewardship Project, a joint program of the Howard County Master Gardeners and the Howard County Recreation & Parks, targets the problem of controlling invasive exotic plant species in the Middle Patuxent Environmental Area (MPEA). Volunteer work dates occur monthly from March through November, skipping July and August. Each date includes an educational component concerning the target invasive species or work area for the day. The meeting location varies by month. Contact jclaffy@howardcountymd.gov for details. JA Rising Women Mentor

JA Rising Women is a unique after-school opportunity for female high school students (grades 9-12) who are interested in exploring their entrepreneurial potential. With the help of businesswomen who serve as mentors, the JA Rising Women team will conceptualize an idea for a product or service, capitalize venture, market product offerings, and reap the profits! JA Rising Women requires a certain level of commitment from the student. This program provides a great experience, and relies on the effort of the students involved to make it successful. You can make an impact and mentor high school students as they launch their businesses! As a volunteer with Junior Achievement of Central Maryland, you will work with students apart of the Rising Women program and coach students through the creation, marketing, and production and sale of product or service that they create. We provide the students with the curriculum and you bring the real-world experience. The program runs for 13 weeks and is perfect for a volunteer who understands the process of turning an idea into a business and is passionate about students achieving the same! At the end of the in-class coaching students will have the chance to compete in our annual Junior Achievement Student Competition where they will present their business pitch to professional judges and showcase their product or service. Volunteers are needed Wednesday evenings from 5-7PM.

Maryland Science Olympiad- State Tournament 2019

Maryland Science Olympiad is hosting its annual State Finals at Johns Hopkins University on Saturday, March 30. Over 700 middle and high schoolers from around the state have competed in 23 events and have qualified to compete here. The winner from this tournament will advance to the National Science Olympiad tournament at Cornell University. We are seeking volunteers to help us run our multifaceted science and engineering tournament! The tournament runs all day, with setup at 7a and closing ceremonyies at 5p. There are two main volunteer shift slots, 830-1130a and 12-3p, with help needed in the 7-830a and 3-awards time slots as well. Volunteers of all backgrounds are needed to both help run events and help with logistics. We have a variety of roles we are seeking to fill, so if you have interest in helping, we have a space for you! The main roles are detailed under the Volunteer sign-up section of our website (www.marylandscienceolympiad.org), you can also volunteer as a general volunteer and we will find a fitting place for you. We hope you will help us put on a world class tournament for some of the top young and budding minds in the state! On this day, we gather at the 7-Eleven and travel to the Happy Helpers Headquarters, where we prepare sandwiches and goodies for the homeless. March Dadness

The Y Head Start Baltimore City and Living Classrooms will host our first ever "March Dadness" - a 3 on 3 Single Elimination Basketball Tournament. This event will bring fathers and father figures of both organizations together to compete for the title of "Best Pick Up Team" on Sunday, March 31st. Volunteers are needed to assist with the following: Updating the tournament brackets. Control the flow of traffic by ushering people from game to game. Help with playground games and activities on the field. Pass out give away materials. Serve meals to participants. Assist with the sign in table. Managing the on-court water jugs. Bridges Chili Cook-off fundraising event

Please consider being a needed volunteer for our 9th annual "Hotter Than Thou" Chili Cook-off. We need many volunteers as greeters, food servers, registration, etc. Help Bridges to Housing Stability, a nonprofit whose mission is providing a path to self sufficienty to prevent and hend homelessness through affordable housing solutions and advocacy in Howard County, Maryland. Shifts to help in all areas are available. Service hours can be signed for. This event raises much needed funds for operating Howard County's largest provider of Case Management services for low income individuals and families. Community Cleanup and Storm Drain Stenciling

Join us on Saturday, April 13th (8:30am-2:00pm) for a day of trash pickup and storm drain stenciling in East Baltimore! Rain date will be Saturday, April 27th** We will meet at the UA House at Fayette operated by Living Classrooms (1100 E. Fayette St) and work in the surrounding areas! Easter in Marydel

At this event will be giving out food, clothes and Easter baskets. We will also, do an Easter egg hunt for the kids that come as well as have crafts. This is any all day event. There will be an opportunity to buy lunch from one of the local places or you can bring your lunch. 4/13 Earth Day Event at Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens

Join us on Saturday, April 13 for our annual Earth Day volunteer service event! We will spend the morning removing invasive plants, collecting litter and working on other park-beautification projects. Registration opens at 8:30am, please arrive no later than 8:45am. We will meet at the maintenance yard near the park entrance. WHERE: Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens, 1550 Anacostia Ave Northeast, Washington, DC 20019. By Car: Enter the park at the Anacostia Ave entrance to access the free visitors parking lot. By Metro: Kenilworth is accessible via the Deanwood Metro stop (orange line). WHAT: Volunteers will spend the morning removing invasive plants from ponds, picking up trash and working on other park projects. The event will run rain or shine—please dress accordingly and plan to work outside. BRING WITH YOU: Be prepared to work outside! If you plan to work in the ponds, we recommend you bring a change of clothes. Please wear closed-toe shoes and weather-appropriate clothes. Please also bring your own water bottle and sunscreen. OTHER: We encourage families and students to join us. Volunteers under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult chaperone, parent or guardian. This event is eligible for Student Service Learning (SSL) hours. DONATIONS: Friends of Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens is a 501(c)3 nonprofit. We work alongside the National Park Service to maintain the park. Our volunteer events are free but we appreciate all donations. You can make a donation by selecting the "donate" ticket when you register on Eventbrite, or drop some cash in our donation box inside the park's visitor center when you come to volunteer.
